Ingleton Waterfalls Trail and Whernside

A path disappears down a hill with grey clouds in the sky.

A late change of plans saw us glamping in Ingleton at the weekend, both my wife and I have memories of doing the Ingleton Waterfalls Trail but neither of us can remember when! We're getting to that age.

Although it was overcast, it was a very warm day so we were soon shedding layers as we started climbing up the steps next to Pecca Falls. We hadn't got the earliest start on the day but still, the trail wasn't so busy until we got to Thornton Force Waterfall.

We had a very leisurely walk around and Belle took on the kids challenge which involved taking rubbings which were mounted on ten posts around the walk... the attendant at the ticket office held me back to secretly pass me the small medal... Psssst, that's for when she has got them all. And get them all she did!

We stayed at Meadow Falls, some half a mile from the start of the Ingleton Waterfalls Trail and once back, I got changed into my shorts and headed back out to run the same trail but tacking on an out and back to Whernside, the highest of the Yorkshire Three Peaks.

Being later in the day, it was congested on the Ingleton Waterfalls Trail (as you'd expect) but once I got off the beaten track it was a lovely long gradual climb out with a few steep sections nearer the summit of Whernside.

Whernside trig point.

As I left the summit, the clouds cleared and what was already a very warm day, became a very hot day and it proved quite a slog back to a water source where I doused my Buff and filled my soft flask before making the final descent back to Ingleton and Meadow Falls beyond.

A thoroughly enjoyable hike with the family and a thoroughly enjoyable run up to Whernside. I'll have to go back another day for Ingleborough and Pen-y-ghent! I’m coming for ya!
